Bromsgrove Sporting lifted the Les James Challenge Cup with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Southam United in the final, played at the Bescot Stadium, Walsall.

Sporting went into the game as favourites coming on the back of 11 straight victories in all competitions, but knew that they would have to be at their best to beat the team from Banbury Road.

After a bright start from the Rouslers, it was United who took the lead in the 10th. minute when Louis Bridges netted from the penalty spot after Joe Adams was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area.

Sporting were level in the 19th. minute when Reece Hewitt played a 1, 2 with Josh McKenzie to bear down on goal and coolly slotted past Tom Cross in the Southam goal, to net his 12th. goal of the season.

The game was played at a frenetic pace, but no more goals were scored in the first half.

The second half came to life in the 73rd. minute when Southam re-took the lead when an incredible 25yard pile driver from full back Lee Thomas, gave Jake Bedford, the Bromsgrove custodian, no chance.

This goal seemed to spark Bromsgrove into life. as it took all of three minutes for Sporting to draw level again when Aaron Williams' ball into the box saw Sam Wills convert from close range, Sam scoring his 17th. goal of the campaign.

Two minutes later the Victoria Ground outfit took the lead for the first time when Josh McKenzie sprung the offside trap and slotted his 12th. goal of the season for Sporting.

At the final whistle there were jubilant scenes from players, managers, directors and fans to see Bromsgrove Sporting lift the Les James Challenge Cup. In a crowd of 550 the fans from Bromsgrove were brilliant.
